We hope everyone has had a great start to their 2017, we are glad to be back with our students and settled into the routine of our classrooms!
Upcoming dates:
January 20th - Bingo Night
January 25th - STEM/ Science Night
February 20th-24th February Break
Math
In math, we have been focusing on representing numbers in 4 different ways (Base Ten Blocks, Place Value, Number Words and Expanded Form) finding 10 more and 10 less than a number and 100 more and 100 less than a number, we are currently learning how to compare numbers that are represented in different ways, using the <, > and = symbols. In the upcoming weeks we will be shifting our focus to problem solving and applying addition strategies when adding numbers that involve regrouping.
Reading
Over the last few days, we have been enjoying learning all about fables and being able to identify the problem and solution and retell their central message, lesson or moral. In the upcoming weeks, we will be learning how to identify the point of view from which a story is told and how it may change throughout a story.
Our current language focus is on adjectives, adverbs and being able to differentiate between the two. In the coming weeks, we will focus on being able to expand simple sentences to make them complex.
Writing
This quarter, our writing focus has changed from informational to opinion writing, we are currently writing letters to persuade others to read our favorite books based upon characters in those books. Our writing will include a good lead in, we will need to state our opinion using at least 2 reasons to support that opinion and a good conclusion, in which we restate our opinions and let our audience know our writing is coming to an end.
Content
Since we returned to school, we have been learning all about the life and mission of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. which will continue through next week. We will be moving on to stars and the moon and will be visiting the StarLab in the Media Center on January 27th!
