Math-Our first math unit is using strategies to add and subtract within 10. We began with different addition strategies this week. The strategies include counting on, making a 10, "flip flop" facts (i.e. 5 + 2 and 2 + 5), doubles, and doubles + 1 (i.e. 6 + 5 can be thought of a 5 + 5 + 1 since the sums to doubles facts are often some of easiest for kids to remember). We are playing many games to both develop fact fluency and to learn the procedures for math groups. We will focus on subtraction strategies next week. Again, we will be playing many different games that will later be added into our math group rotations. We will focus on counting back and using addition to solve subtraction problems (i.e. 9 - 4 could be solved as 4 + ? = 9).
Reading-In shared reading, we are reading books and practicing asking and answering comprehension questions about the text. During our guided reading time, we are building stamina for independent reading and writing so that we may begin to pull guided reading groups soon.
Writing-We are studying the difference between common and proper nouns and capitalizing proper nouns. We are also getting started with Writer's Workshop and will be learning the procedures for writing time.
Science/Social Studies-We started our study of the seasons, and this is a unit that will be revisited throughout the year. The students will begin learning about the regions and rivers of Georgia in the coming weeks.
