We have an exciting couple of weeks ahead of us. Veteran's Day lunch will occur on Thursday, November 9th. Check with your child's teacher to see what time your lunch will be. Tuesday, November 7th is Election Day, there will be no school for the children. Friday November 10th is when the Veteran's Day fun run will happen during your child's specials time. :-) The Creek Native American experience will take place on Tuesday, November 14th.
Math-We have been practicing double digit addition using our four strategies-place value (partial sums), base ten blocks, open number line, and 100's chart. You should have received a parent guide that explains the strategies since they are quite different from the traditional way of adding and subtracting. It gives the students a conceptual understanding of how to add and subtract instead of just doing the steps. They will apply these addition strategies to subtracting this week.
Social Studies- We are in the midst of our historical figures unit. The students are learning all about the famous figures that helped to create the state of Georgia. They have read books and will be researching about these people. The students have been fascinated with their lives back then and how they relate to their own lives today. We can't wait for our Creek Indian field trip to become immersed in their Native American culture!
Reading- In reading, the students have been practicing sequencing non-fiction information that they read. We learned all about Sequoyah and James Oglethorpe. We have made classroom timelines to see where and when these historical figures' lives overlap. It will become more apparent when we learn about Mary Musgrove and Tomochichi.
Writing- The students have enjoyed planning, writing, and performing their force and motion experiments using cars and ramps. They have really taken on the role of becoming scientists and the steps a real scientist would take to complete an experiment.
