Thank you for taking the time out of your busy schedules to meet with us during conference week. It was a very busy yet enjoyable week. We love being able to share the growth that has already occurred this year, and we're looking forward to all the learning that will take place during the rest of the school year. If you think of any questions or concerns, please contact your child's teacher. We're happy to help!
Coming Up:
Reading: Our literacy mini-lessons will always focus on building strong comprehension skills. We will also discuss fluency when reading, introduce adverbs, and practice identifying the different parts of speech (nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs).
Writing: Our writing mini-lessons will focus on making stories more interesting by adding appropriate adverbs and adjectives. We will be taking boring stories that contain no adverbs or adjectives and revising those boring stories by adding appropriate adverbs and adjectives. Our reading and writing mini-lessons will be closely linked as we focus on identifying parts of speech and correctly using those parts of speech within pieces of writing.
Spelling: Our spelling pattern will be short vowel words. Students will be working on spelling words with short vowels as well as reading words with those spelling patterns.
Math: We are working on identifying and drawing plane and solid shapes. Second graders are responsible for understanding the differences between triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons, hexagons, and cubes. Under the heading of quadrilaterals, we will be learning about squares, rectangles, parallelograms, rhombuses, and trapezoids.
Social Studies: After learning about James Oglethorpe over the past two weeks, we will be switching our focus to Mary Musgrove. Students will be learning about her contributions, planning presentations, and sharing new learning with the class.
