Week: Aug. 10-14
We are already into the second week of our school year and there are lots of exciting things going on!
Just a reminder-
Open House is this Tuesday, August 11th. The first session is at 5:30 pm and the second session at 7:00 pm. We encourage you all to join us at one of the above times so we can give you important information about second grade and answer any questions you might have!
Math- This week in math we are beginning to focus on place value. As a second grader, your child will be learning the place value of numbers 0-999. We will introduce these concepts using hands-on manipulatives to get the students comfortable, and then moving onto the numerical values. We like to introduce math games that reinforce these concepts which the kids are able to play while we are doing small group instruction. This allows for multiple opportunities for the students to find success in what they are learning.
Reading- We will slowly and thoroughly be introducing all of our Daily 5 stations this week (Read to self, word work, listen to reading, work on writing, and read to someone). These stations give the students multiple opportunities to practice their reading and writing skills, all while allowing the teacher to pull small groups to work on reading strategies. During our shared reading time (whole group read-aloud) we will be reading various narratives that will tie into our writing. While we read these narratives, we will focus on beginning, middle, and end as well as characters, setting, and plot.
Writing- We will be introducing narrative writing this week. Through our shared reading, we will make connections from the books we have read, to how they were written. This connection will help the students see how real authors turn their ideas into narratives (stories recounting events).
Science- In order to teach seasonal changes, the students must make observations about the world around them and then discuss the changes they see. We have already found a tree to observe throughout the year. This week, the students will begin to look up sunrise/sunset times and see how these times change throughout the year. We will also be doing a fun seasons blog activity in the media center with Mrs. Dupuis!
Social Studies-We will be learning all about cardinal directions (north, south, east, west) and intermediate directions (north west, north east, south west, south east).
We are looking forward to another great week in Second Grade!
