We are excited for a new school year and it was so great to see everybody at Open House, we trust that you found your session informative. We have been busy establishing rules, routines, and procedures in our classrooms and are adjusting well to a new year. Each month we aim to update the blog with upcoming events and the topics we are covering in each subject area. We are also in the process of teaching the children how to access the blog for different resources that are available under the "Learning Links" tab.
You will also have the chance to be a Mystery Reader in your child's classroom, sign up to be our beloved copy parent each Friday or help to run the Second Grade Store once monthly under the "Volunteer" tab.

Math
Currently in math, we are learning strategies for mental math with both addition and subtraction that will also help with building math fact fluency. In the coming weeks, we will be working on representing numbers to 1,000 in 4 different ways, using base ten blocks, the number word, place value and expanded form.
Reading
In reading, we are working on identifying and retelling the beginning, middle and end of a story. The beginning of a story typically introduces characters, sets the scene and provides a little background information, the middle of a story is where the action and most exciting parts happen, the ending concludes all the action and problem or mystery in the story is often resolved.
Writing
In writing, we are working on establishing how our writing time will look, ideas for writing and what writers do, we will then be moving on to telling a small moment story across our fingers which will then become a published piece of writing. Our grammar focus for the next few weeks is identifying and capitalizing proper nouns.
Content
Our first science standard focuses on matter and identifying the different states of matter, how matter can change states and if those changes are reversible or irreversible. After concluding matter, we will switch over to social studies and the different regions and rivers in Georgia.
